Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes Eyeshadow Palette Face Chart

Makeup by Mario’s new, iconic face chart design is born!

When anyone mentions the name 'Mario' when talking about makeup, EVERYONE knows who they are talking about; Mario Dedivanovic! One of the most influential, forward-thinking, and inspiring Makeup Artists on the planet and founder of one of the fastest growing, most popular top-tier cosmetics brands 'Makeup by Mario'. Without a doubt one of the biggest and most successful in the industry, and I'm unashamed to admit that the opportunity that came my way to collaborate on the new Makeup by Mario Face chart was a girl's wish come true. Can you imagine?

Designing the Makeup by Mario Facechart template

I especially admire Mario for the humble personality he has managed to maintain through the decades of success, and this process of designing the first facechart template was a labor of love from both sides. As is the case with visionary people, pioneering beyond borders in search of perfection, Mario didn't choose an 'obvious' design, or what's already out there, but envisioned an edgy iconic face chart, pure 'feeling' based. So all that remained for me was the honorable task of translating what was in his head into an actual design. Below a short video of the designing process.

There couldn't be a better time-match to reveal the new face chart than during the release of the Ethereal Eyes eyeshadow palette –Finally, a palette that has been clearly thought through, a genuinely brilliant combination of colors, and therefore a pleasure to work with. Below is a brief overview of how this gorgeous ethereal day look is done on face chart. Needless to say, but still... these steps are done for application on paper, not skin, which are two different things.

The first step for this ethereal day-look face chart is building the skin using the Softsculp Bronzers, for which you use 2 to 3 shades, light, medium, and dark; starting with the lightest shades, fill in the entire face chart. Then, gradually build up the shadows, going slightly darker, and follow up for the facial contours by adding darker shades; you could even add some eyeshadow from the Ethereal Eyes palette (brown, cool shade) for more definition.

Here's a great tip to take away: a shadow is never 'warm'; to create shadow use cool tones (and yes... this is also applicable for facial application). To add more warmth, use a bronzer in the transition parts.

To achieve the mesmerizing Ethereal Eyes day-look, subtly build up layer by layer with the colors from the Ethereal Eyes eyeshadow palette. Then, to recreate the wet-look effect, use a white pen or liner, and apply white dots to create the illusion of shimmer. Of course, you can apply shimmer shades from the palette on paper, but only in video do sparkles appear visible.

Also, often shimmers don't translate as the look you intend to create; this is why, for face charts, you can easily mimic the shimmer effect by adding small white dots as sparkles.

Gently add a touch of color using a blush

What I find so helpful and fun while facecharting, is using this double-ended, multi-use F3 brush which is perfect for applying highlighter and blush; it's just so cool to flip it around. For a fresh touch of color on the cheekbones, take a Soft Pop Powder Blush! Apply the blush with the dual-tip brush softly, nearly touching the surface, for a more intense color; build slowly adding more pigment.

Mimic the color of lipstick by drawing it with eyeshadow

The thing with lipsticks and face charts is, that you need to keep in mind that paper is quite white and 2 dimensional. So, if you start drawing with lipsticks, colors will often turn out differently than when applied to human lips. They will appear dark and dull, as experience shows.

Also, for this ethereal lip-look: I chose to mimic the color of the lipstick by drawing it with eyeshadow (of course, only on paper, lol). Add some highlight details with a white marker to simulate glossiness; for the same reason, you can't show any glossy product on paper, and it doesn't give the desired effect.

And... voila, the end result! I can't emphasize enough how proud and grateful I am.

Imagine for a moment how cool this collaboration with Makeup by Mario actually is…
