Makeup Classes & Makeup Schools: Everything You Need to Know

Dream of Flawless Makeup? Makeup Classes Are Your Secret Weapon

Have you ever dreamed of flawless makeup application, every single time? Perhaps you crave the ability to create dramatic looks or simply want to enhance your everyday makeup routine. If so, then makeup classes or makeup schools could be the perfect solution to elevate your skills and unlock your creative potential.

Do Makeup Courses Work?

Absolutely! Makeup courses offer a structured learning environment with several advantages:

  •  Develop a Strong Foundation: A well-designed course provides a step-by-step approach, ensuring you build a solid foundation in makeup application techniques.

  • Expert Instruction: Learn from experienced makeup artists who can share their industry knowledge, professional tips, and the latest trends.

  • Practice & Feedback: Many courses incorporate hands-on practice sessions where you can experiment with techniques and receive valuable feedback from instructors.

  • Supportive Community: Connect with other aspiring makeup artists, share experiences, and build a network of like-minded individuals.

In-person Makeup School vs Online Makeup Classes:

House of Orange –Mirror Mirror

Traditionally, makeup education took place in brick-and-mortar makeup schools. Years ago, when I was at the start of my career as an industry professional, I chose to take a traditional makeup class and chose what I thought was the best in my country at the time. I really enjoyed traveling to Amsterdam every week and did my training at House of Orange. At the time, it was the most prominent institute from which many successful artists emerged, like for instance Celine Bernaerts.

Of course, with my many years of background in fine art, specialized at an academic level in realism, and my teacher training within that subject, I had a considerable head start, but I personally really enjoyed the teaching days, the learning process, the techniques, and mentors such as Pernell Kusmus who I absolutely love! What was a bit trickier for me as an introvert is that you had to bring your own models every week.

Personally, I had no problem with the fixed scedule at which the course took place, the enormous travel times, and the high costs, but fellow students sometimes complained about this. Not me, I was on my journey of becoming a makeup artist and enjoying the lifestyle. Traveling with your suitcase full of makeup, eager for what we would learn today, I was on the outward journey, and thinking about what I had learned on the journey back. That energy is great! I enjoyed those days, the good old days! However, the rise of online learning has opened doors to a wider range of possibilities:

  • Flexibility: Online courses allow you to learn at your own pace and schedule, making them ideal for busy individuals who can't commit to a fixed program.

  • Accessibility: Explore a vast array of courses from instructors around the world, catering to various skill levels and makeup styles.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Online courses can be a more affordable option compared to traditional makeup school programs.

  • Specialism: There are even courses that, without you would expect it, are a super valuable addition to your makeup toolbox. Truly niche-related, in-depth courses, from proven top performers within the artistry of makeup, from which you can benefit so much for basically peanuts in terms of investments. But more about that later!

How to find the Perfect Makeup Course?

With so many makeup classes and schools available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here are some tips to guide you:

  1. Identify Your Goals: Are you aiming for a professional career in makeup artistry or simply looking to improve your personal makeup skills? For the latter, there's a lot to find on Youtube, great content as well.

  2. Consider Your Learning Style: Do you prefer a hands-on approach with in-person instruction, or are you comfortable learning online through video tutorials?

  3. Research & Comparison: Read reviews of different makeup schools and courses, compare curriculums, pricing structures, and instructor qualifications before making a decision.

  4. Commitment: Do you have what it takes? For instance, are you persistent and self-motivated enough to follow self-study online, or give up quickly. On the other hand, can you handle the time-consuming burden of a personal makeup class, or will it bother you after the first few times?

  5. Budget: What are you willing to invest in your future, and do you have the resources to do so? Traditional makeup classes in particular can be quite expensive, but my view on this is: You cannot invest enough in knowledge and techniques for what you are passionate about. It will pay for itself later.

What are the best makeup classes out there?

While online courses offer flexibility and convenience, local makeup schools provide a unique learning experience with hands-on practice and direct interaction with instructors. Although I can't give you direct advice about the best makeup schools locally in your area, nor did I follow all online classes out there, here are some tips to guide your research for the perfect makeup school:

Research School Reputation & Credentials:

Read Reviews & Testimonials: Look for online reviews from past students on platforms like Google Reviews, Yelp, and social media. Testimonials on the school's website can also be helpful, but consider them with a grain of salt.

Industry Recognition: Seek out schools with accreditation from recognized organizations within the beauty industry. This demonstrates a commitment to quality education and industry standards.

Instructor Qualifications: Research the instructors' background and experience. Are they established makeup artists with a proven track record?

Which successful Artist where 'born' in this school? You'd be amazed to see how some school happens to form countless success stories. And it is the schools with the best connections with agencies, magazines, and their establishment within the makeup artistry that best help their best students get started. Their reputation stands or falls with the artists they supply.

Explore Curriculum & Class Structure:

Course Options: Does the school offer a variety of courses or programs that align with your learning goals? For instance, if you want to make up brides, don't go for a school that focuses on editorial looks mainly. Look for a curriculum that covers essential techniques, product knowledge, and professional practices.

Class Size & Schedule: Consider the ideal class size for your learning style. Smaller class sizes allow for more personalized attention from instructors. Choose a schedule that fits your needs, whether it's full-time, part-time, or evenings/weekends.

Contact the School & Schedule a Visit:

Get in Touch: Don't hesitate to contact the school directly. Ask questions about their programs, instructors, and student support services.

Schedule a Tour: If possible, schedule a tour of the school facilities to get a feel for the learning environment and meet with instructors or current students. Open days are of course the ideal opportunity for this.

Consider Cost & Financial Aid:

Tuition & Fees: Research the total cost of the program, including tuition, fees, and any required materials.

Financial Aid Options: Explore financial aid options offered by the school or third-party lenders. Some schools might also offer payment plans or scholarships.

Bonus Tip: Look for schools that offer student discounts on professional makeup kits and supplies. This can be a cost-saving benefit in the long run.

Remember: Choosing the right makeup school is an investment. By carefully researching your options and considering your goals, learning style, and budget, you can find the perfect program to launch your makeup artistry journey or elevate your personal skills.

Beyond Foundation & Eyeshadow: The Power of Face Charts

Understand the Art of Makeup with Face Charts

While traditional makeup classes equip you with valuable application techniques, in real life or online, many overlook the importance of face charts. These days A dedicated face chart course can be the perfect complement to any makeup education:

  • Visualize & Plan: Face charts allow you to map out a makeup look before touching your face. This meticulous planning ensures flawless execution, minimizes product waste, and streamlines the application process.

  • Master Light & Shadow: Learn how to manipulate light and shadow on the face to sculpt features, create dramatic effects, and achieve a flawless, dimensional look.

  • Color Theory Expertise: Develop a comprehensive understanding of color theory to create stunning color combinations and complementary makeup looks for any occasion.

  • Understanding Facial Anatomy: In-depth knowledge of facial structure allows you to tailor makeup application to enhance individual features and create a truly customized look.

Conclusion:

Investing in a makeup course can be a game-changer in your makeup journey. By equipping yourself with the right knowledge and skills, you can unlock your creative potential and achieve your makeup goals. Whether you choose a traditional makeup school program or a convenient online course, remember to prioritize your learning style and goals.
