Makeup Face Template: The Ins and Outs from an Industry Face Chart Pro

Hey there, makeup lover, guru or aspiring artist! Have you ever flipped through a glossy magazine and wondered how makeup artists achieve those flawless, airbrushed looks? Well, a big part of the secret lies in a not-so-secret weapon: makeup face templates, also known as face charts. Today, we're diving deep with me as an industry face chart pro to unlock the mysteries of the face template and how they can help you elevate your makeup game!

What is a Makeup Face Template?

Think of a makeup face template as a blank canvas for your artistry.   It's a pre-drawn outline of a face, usually featuring key features like eyes, nose, lips, and brows.   These templates, or face charts, come in various formats:

  • Digital: Downloadable files for use with design software or drawing apps on tablets.

  • Printable: Free or paid high-resolution files you can print at home.

  • Pre-printed: books with pre-printed templates on (hopefully) selected art paper.

Why Use a Makeup Face Template?

There are many benefits to incorporating face templates into your makeup routine, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro:

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Templates allow you to experiment with different looks, color combinations, and techniques without washing makeup on your face.

  • Planning & Precision: Visualize and plan your makeup application beforehand, ensuring flawless results and symmetrical placement.

  • Sharpen Your Skills: Templates provide a platform to hone specific skills like blending eyeshadow or perfecting contour lines.

  • Boost Confidence: By practicing on a template first, you'll approach real-face makeup application with more confidence and control.

Industry Insights from a Face Chart Pro:

Here are some exclusive tips from a professional face chart artist (yes, that’s me):

  • Choose Your First Template Wisely: Select a template that closely resembles your own face shape and cultural features for the most realistic practice.

  • Invest in Variety: Consider having a collection of templates with different eye shapes, facial structures, and broad cultural covering for broader exploration. (Fun fact: some years ago NYX Professional Makeup teamed up with me to design the first-ever series of ethnicity face charts, a diverse series of face templates that made a shift in the industry)

  • Beyond Practice: Templates are great for creating a portfolio or showcasing makeup looks for clients or social media, and as a hobby for makeup lovers, it happens to work therapeutically.

  • Extra tip: Choose fine art paper to print your templates for the best results, Although there are great template books on Amazon, nothing beats fine art paper when it comes to face chart makeup art.

What makes a great face template or face chart?

Although there are endless boring and simple designs on the internet, often designed on digital tablets or with computer programs, I opt for artisanally made designs, drawn with pencils, pens, ink, or paint, and designed with the end result in mind. But I have been in the business for more than 10 years and design for the most prominent brands such as L'oreal, Nyx Professional Makeup, Estee Lauder, Makeup by Mario and so on. Those years of experience at a top level still push me to keep optimizing. To a layman it might look like simple line drawings, some outlines on paper, but all my designs are well thought out and meticulously fine-tuned to meet the requirements of my clients.
